What do you know your neighbor? You are saving the planet
Meet your neighbor helps save the planet. That is the main finding of a study that socializing with neighbors leads to beneficial behaviors for the planet, even more than spending time with friends or family.
The study, published in Environment and Behavior, found that those who visit their neighbors are more likely to cultivate positive habits on the environment, specifically in relation to the conservation of water and energy consumption of organic fruits and vegetables and use automotive sound.
"These findings suggest that our neighbors play a unique and crucial for us to act on climate change role," says study author Thomas Macias, University of Vermont. "Surprisingly, the effects in favor of ecology were higher from the relationship of people to their neighbors than dealing with relatives or close friends."
Researchers attribute the differences, in part, to the fact that with relatives cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds are shared, which is a "similarity that provides emotional benefits, but limited exposure to important new ideas," says Macías, professor of Sociology in that university.
In contrast, the neighbors are relative but sufficiently different to expose a greater amount of fresh information, such as related issues and environmental practices.
The shared geography means that the neighborhood discussions gravitate naturally toward sustainability issues.
To identify predictors of 'green behavior', the researchers used US General Survey 2010, the largest and newest in terms of attitudes and behaviors related to the environment in that country behaviors inventory. Scientists compared the results with green three variables: personal relationships, generalized trust and participation in community organizations.
"The neighbors may be important role models," says Macias. "Talks neighborhood, exchanges sidewalk and neighborhood visits can be some of the best ways to learn about environmentally friendly practices."
Conclusion: Be kind to your neighbors; could be the secret to greater action on climate change, say researchers.

What do you know about cell differentiation ?
cellular differentiation is the process by which a less specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type. Different tissues have different kinds of cells.
Differentiation occurs many times during the development of a multi-cellular organism as the organism changes from a single zygote to a complex system of tissues and cell types. Differentiation is a common process in adults as well: adult stem cells divide and create fully-differentiated daughter cells during tissue repair and during normal cell turnover.

What do we know about Apple's processor?
Apple's A5 processor has had some long legs. Originally introduced in the iPad 2 in early 2011, the chip has since proliferated across Apple's entire lineup—versions of it have been included in the iPhone 4S, the Apple TV, and the fifth generation iPod touch. Even the A5X in the 2012 iPad simply pumps up the A5's graphics capabilities while leaving the actual Cortex A9 cores untouched. Between the new iPod touches and the $99 iPhone 4S, it looks like the A5 is going to be for sale well into 2013 and beyond.
If the A5 is any indication, then, we'll be spending the next few years with the A6 chip that Apple introduced in the iPhone 5 yesterday. While the A5 is a thoroughly known quantity at this point, Apple's tendency to avoid talking about specifications means that we know next to nothing about what makes it tick. All we have now are three vague promises: compared to the A5 in the iPhone 4S, the new A6 promises "up to" two times the CPU and graphics performance; the A6 is 22 percent smaller than the A5; and the battery life of the new iPhone is slightly better than the battery life of the 4S. Absent any actual technical data about the new SoC, we're left to do the math ourselves.
Size and battery life
The cause of the reduced size and increased battery life of the iPhone 5 is pretty easy to guess: while the A5 chip in the iPhone 4S is still manufactured on the A5's original 45nm process, the A6 is probably manufactured on Samsung's 32nm process—Apple has already used this process on the A5 in the revised iPad 2 and the most recent Apple TV (and, in all likelihood, the newest iPod touch). Using the new process on an existing design would help Apple and Samsung to work out any kinks, clearing the way toward making a new chip on the same process. Intel's "tick-tock" processor release cadence uses the same methodology to reduce yield issues and other problems that can come from trying to make a new chip on a new process at the same time.
The 32nm Apple A5 is 41 percent smaller than the 45nm version in the iPhone 4S, so a 32nm Apple A6 would have some room to grow while still remaining smaller.
According to Chipworks, the 32nm A5 is about 41 percent smaller than the 45nm version, so a 32nm A6 would have room to add more silicon while still remaining smaller in absolute size. The 32nm A5 in the revised iPad 2 also delivers a 20 to 30 percent battery life increase over the original version with the 45nm chip, so the ten-or-so percent increase in battery life for the iPhone 5 is also pretty plausible, even given the higher-performing SoC.
Increased performance
With all of that in mind, let's look at these doubled performance claims. To get this big of a jump, you can either (1) double the hardware, going from the dual-core CPU and GPU in the A5 to quad-core parts in the A6, or (2) use newer, more efficient architectures, possibly combined with higher clock speeds (increasing clock speeds enough to get twice the performance from the same architecture would probably be too onerous from a power consumption perspective).
So, does the A6 use a quad-core Cortex A9-based chip combined with a quad core GPU? Let's look at the 2012 iPad's A5X, which uses a quad-core GPU to double the A5's graphics power and drive the 2048x1536 Retina Display. Our pals at Chipworks put the die size of the 45nm A5X at 12.90mm by 12.79mm (or 165mm, total), while the 45nm A5 is just 10.09mm by 12.15mm (or 122.6mm, total). Let's assume that if Apple decided to shrink the A5X using Samsung's 32nm process, that the die size would shrink by the same 41 percent, putting the size of a theoretical 32nm A5X at about 97.35mm, or about 21 percent smaller than the 45nm A5.
Enlarge / The quad-core GPU in Apple's A5X would make it a big chip, even at 32nm.
Now, keep in mind that while Apple says the A5X doubles the graphics performance of the A5, its CPU performance is identical to the older chip. Our 32nm A5X is about the right size and it has the right graphics performance, but it doesn't increase the CPU performance the requisite amount. Thus, it's fair to say that the A6 isn't using a quad-core CPU and GPU to achieve the stated gains.
There's also another reason to go with a faster dual-core CPU than a slower quad-core design: iOS and its apps have been running on the dual-core A5 for some time and as such are already optimized for two cores, and adding another two cores would only unlock those performance gains for developers who put in the extra work.
For these reasons, I think the current scuttlebutt is correct: the A6 is going to be the first chip to market based on the Cortex A15 processor architecture, which is said to be 40 percent faster than older Cortex A9 chips at equal clock speeds. That, combined with higher clock speeds (the A5 in the iPhone 4S is clocked at just 800MHz), could easily get us twice the CPU performance while still using a dual-core design. Even if the two cores are larger than two Cortex A9 cores, they're still not as big as four Cortex A9 cores.
The same holds true for the GPU side: by our calculations, there's probably not enough room for the A5X's quad-core Imagination Technologies SGX543MP4 along with the A15 cores, given what we know about the size of the A6, but a dual-core, faster-clocked Series 6 GPU from Imagination Technologies could likely achieve the same performance while using less space than four less-powerful cores.
Many things have to be true for these assumptions to work out: if Apple is using a 28nm process instead of a 32nm process, or if the A6 is using the same 512MB of RAM as the A5, either of those factors would probably be enough to throw off our math. But given that this is a major chip revision for Apple and that it will probably be serving in not just the next iPad, but future iterations of the Apple TV and iPod touch for the next few years, the use of forward-looking technology makes more sense than would beefing up old technology with more cores or higher clock speeds.
When we know more about the A6 for sure, you can be sure that we'll take a closer look at the chip and its implications for the rest of the market and for current and future Apple devices. For now, this represents our best guess.

What do you know about White Lake?
The survey is very similar to one conducted before the habitat restoration program started, Muskegon Conservation District Project Manager Dallas Goldberg said, to gauge if education programs about invasive species, shoreline softening and White Lake’s environmental challenges were effective.
“If our end survey shows, for instance, that phragmites is an invasive species that people don’t understand, then we need to do more education,” he said.
The survey can be accessed through www.muskegoncd.org/whitelakepac.

What do you know about Country Fest at Gillette Stadium?
Foxborough is expected to see over 100,000 country fans at Gillette Stadium this weekend as Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw wrap up their 2012 “Brothers of the Sun” Tour. Concerts will be held Friday and Saturday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
- August 25, 2012
The New England Country Music Festival atGillette Stadium has become an annual event in Foxborough since its inception in 2004.
The show, referred to by many concertgoers as “CountryFest,” features some of the industry’s biggest stars on one stage and this weekend will be no different as Kenny Chesney returns to Foxborough for the seventh time as the festival’s headliner and he’s bringing some all-star friends with him.
Jake Owen, Grace Potter and Tim McGraw will join Chesney on stage this weekend (Friday and Saturday) for the ninth annual Country Musical Festival in front of sellout crowds of 50,000 to 55,000 people each night.
“It’s the largest country music event in New England each year, and country music continues to gain in popularity,” said Gillette Stadium spokesperson Jeff Cournoyer.
The festival enjoyed initial success in 2004 and 2005 before exploding in 2006. In that year, the Gillette Stadium concert became the top-grossing country music show in history and "Country Fest" was born.
The ticket demand over the years has increased steadily as country music continues to gain popularity throughout New England. As a result of the overwhelming interest, Gillette Stadium has added a second day to the festival. Each show is similar – featuring the same artists – and is meant to give more fans an opportunity to experience the festival.
In advance of the two-day festival, here are five things you need to know about Country Fest weekend in Foxborough:
1. Parking Ban in Residential Areas will be Enforced and Other Parking and Event Entry Information
Stadium parking lots are scheduled to open to general parking at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Foxborough Police and Gillette Stadium personnel ask fans not to arrive prior to lots opening at 1:30 p.m.
Other important information for those attending Friday or Saturday’s event:
- All passengers in vehicles must have a ticket for entry into Gillette Stadium parking lots
- Transportation of alcohol between parking lots will not be allowed
- No tailgating will be allowed after 5:30 p.m.
While some concertgoers may view security at this weekend’s event as strict – Cournoyer says Gillette Stadium personnel works closely with local and state police to ensure safety at all stadium events, especially ones that produce record crowds.
“As with any major event, we've worked closely with [Foxborough Police Chief Edward O'Leary], his team and the Massachusetts State Police to continue to improve traffic management, as well as to identify and address any public safety issues,” he said. “We make tweaks each year to try to improve on previous events. It has been a successful partnership.”
Foxborough residents are reminded that the town’s parking bylaw that bans parking for a fee on residential properties during Gillette Stadium events will be in effect Friday and Saturday. If residents are caught parking cars on their property for money, they will be subject to a $100 fine for each car in violation on that property. For more on the parking bylaw, click here.
As for general parking, the following rates apply:
- $40 for cars
- $125 Limos
- $125 RV's and oversized vans/cars
- $200 busses
Note that Gillette Stadium Lots are cash only. For more parking information, click here.
2. Sellout Crowds Mean Traffic Delays in Area
Two sellout crowds of 50,000 to 55,000 fans are expected in Foxborough on Friday and Saturday to see Kenny Chesney’s “Brothers of the Suns” Tour. Officials advise those travelling through the area to plan ahead and expect traffic delays similar to New England Patriots games, especially Friday night, where concert traffic will be added to the evening commute.
Click here to keep an eye on concrt traffic with Patch’s live traffic feature.
3. The Dos and Don’ts at Gillette Stadium During Concerts
Note the following will not be allowed in Gillette Stadium Parking Lots:
- Any vehicle towing a trailer (this includes fifth-wheel RV units).
- Professional catering trucks and or services without prior written approval from Stadium Management.
- Excessive tailgate setups that impede on customers parked around your vehicles, emergency access or deemed to be unsafe or inappropriate by Stadium Management.
- Any type of swimming pool, portable pool, hot tubs, water filled pickup trucks, or the like.
- Branded vehicles that Stadium Management determines to be advertizing to the general public.
For a list of prohibited and acceptable items at Gillette Stadium, click here.
4. Did You Know …
- While Chesney has made the New England Country Music Festival the largest concert series in New England, he did not headline the first Country Fest in 2004. Do you know the artist who did? Here’s a hint … his bar and grill is located in Patriot Place. That’s right, country fans … Toby Keith headlined the 2004 Country Music Festival.
- This year will mark Chesney’s seventh Country Fest, which included consecutive appearances from 2005-2009. In 2010, while Chesney took a break from touring, Brad Paisley headlined the event. Chesney returned for two performances last August at Gillette Stadium, even with Tropical Storm Irene on the verge of hitting the region.
- Gillette Stadium is often Chesney’s last stop on his summer tours because it is one of his favorite venues.
When in New England, Chesney often embraces the culture of the crowd. In past performances at Gillette Stadium, he has invited Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots players on stage with him during his shows and features a slideshow of photos and video of Boston and the surrounding area during the performance of his song, “Back Where I Come From.”
5. Lineup of Artists and Possible Set Lists for Performers
Country artist Jake Owen and his hit “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” will open the ninth annual New England Country Music Festival; taking the Gillette Stadium stage at 4:30 p.m. The rest of the musical lineup is as follows:
- Potter and the Nocturnals
- McGraw (on stage around 6 p.m.)
- Chesney
To give fans attending Country Fest this weekend an idea of what they may hear, we’ve done some research to see what songs these artists have been performing on “The Brothers of the Sun” Tour. Here’s a look at the set lists from the tour’s last three shows. Information courtesy of www.setlist.fm.

what do you know about your online customers?
The Internet has transformed many aspects of our lives, and shopping is
one of them. Online commerce is growing exponentially right before us.
In the case of traditional brick-and-mortar stores, one gets to read the
body language and expressions of the customers, from which their
satisfaction or dissatisfaction can be gauged. This is not possible in
online commerce. So, it is imperative to have a structured process to
measure and analyse the effectiveness of an online store.
The website is one of the key parameters for a successful online retail
business. There are plenty of resources available for e-commerce
entrepreneurs to create shopping websites. But how efficient is a
website, and what are the key performance indicators of the online
store? Analytics plays an important role in measuring online store
business. It provides valuable insights that aid in strategic decisions.
Performance indicators
First, visitors to the website and their behaviour are the crucial data
to be captured and analysed. The percentage of new and returning
visitors provides a good indicator of the overall business health.
Browsing habits and visitors’ intent vary drastically. So, it is
important to segment visitors of the website and develop a deeper
understanding of the audience.
Segment them in meaningful ways: are they buyers or browsers?
Prospective or committed customers? Unregistered visitors or registered
users? Geolocation of visitors is another category to be considered for
segmentation. Then, create different sets of metrics for each segment.
For example, average visits, average time spent, average order value and
conversions by each segment. These metrics would be very useful in the
strategy to attract the right customers to the Web store.
Next, gather and analyse the click path, which is the sequence of
hyperlinks that visitors follow on the website. Create metrics such as
page views per session — this is an indicator of how compelling and
easily navigated your visitors find your website.
Also, analyse the shopping metaphors. Shopping metaphors in an online
store are the different ways that shoppers use to find products of
interest — internal search provided within the website is one such way.
Tracking how searching visitors differentially convert into customers
should help you understand how effective your search engine is.
Next, measure the shopping cart activities. Metrics such as ‘average
items per cart completed’ are indicators of acquiring better qualified
visitors to the site. ‘Abandonment rate’ will help in studying the
reasons for abandoning products in the cart. The data from shopping cart
logs will also provide useful information on sales and demand
forecasting, promotion planning and shopper behaviour analysis.
Next is the metrics from the ‘check-out’ process. Measure the speed of
the ‘check-out’ process, effectiveness of payment gateway and details
such as number of drop-outs during check-out. Valuable insights can be
gained from these metrics.
Analyse merchandising cues. Merchandising cues in an online store are
the different ways Web merchants present their products to motivate
purchase. The examples are cross-sells, up-sells and promotions. Collect
the metrics related to merchandising cues, for example cross-sell
sales; this is an indicator of relevancy of the cross-sell
recommendations.
How they got there
Knowing how visitors reached your site is as important as knowing what
they do on the site. Track and measure the traffic to the website and
also the sources of the traffic. The metrics collected in this regard
will help in evaluating the marketing techniques such as banner ads,
referral sites and paid searches.

What do you know about organ donation?
Hard as it may be to believe, but some people think that if they're registered as organ donors, doctors may be less inclined to save their lives.
A quarter of Pennsylvanians think so, according to a survey commissioned by Donate Life Pennsylvania. It's not true. Additionally, the organization says there is a continuing myth that wealthy people are more likely to get an organ donation than low-income people. That's also not true, according to Donate Life.
To help dispel the myths, the organization, a collaboration between the state's two organ procurement agencies -- Gift of Life Donor Program and the Center for Organ & Recovery Education -- and the state departments of Health and Transportation, has released a couple of videos on YouTube.
Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiEQt0uY3OE&feature=youtu.be and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_y9K-9wZHI&feature=youtu.be
to see the videos.
“Nearly 30 percent of Pennsylvanians who stated that they are ‘not at all likely’ to become a registered organ donor stated that receiving information that dispels common myths about organ and tissue donation would motivate them to become a donor,” Gift of Life President and CEO Howard M. Nathan said in a statement. “These videos were created just for them, as a means of disseminating this important information in a venue that is convenient and widely used – social media.”

What You Do Know About Body Language?
Back then the idea was that each gesture had a secret meaning and once you understood it you could use that understanding to control other people.
That’s ridiculous. First of all, most gestures can mean a dozen things. And second, most gestures don’t bestow magical powers of manipulation on geeky boys, for example, trying to seduce attractive co-eds.
That school of thought came about because the first researchers of body language focused on gestures with specific meanings, or emblems as they called them. For example, if I hold up 2 fingers with my palm facing out, most people in the US and in parts of Europe will understand that to mean “peace,” or perhaps “V for Victory.” If I reverse the direction of my palm, some people in various parts of the world will take offense.
Similarly, if I make a circle with my thumb and forefinger and hold it up, most people in the US and Western Europe will take it that I’m signaling “OK.” In other parts of the world, people will take offense.
That’s the way the study of body language began. The arm-waving that all of us do when we’re speaking was dismissed as not meaningful.
Now, we’ve become a little more enlightened, and we’ve learned to read that arm-waving and other motions and gestures of the body to signify, if not quite precise and specific things, intent, emotion, and attitude – much more interesting stuff. Popular awareness has caught up to this point, mostly, and at least well-informed people know, for example, that wide-open eyes (or pupils) signify interest.
But there’s a further aspect of body language that most people are not aware of, and it’s the most interesting of all. Body language doesn’t just signal what you’re thinking. It also actually shapes what you’re thinking.
Here’s how it works. If you stand tall, and take up as much space as possible, your body will manufacture more testosterone, and less cortisol (a stress hormone). You’ll actually start to feel more confident and powerful, and you will believe that you are so. Body language determines attitude. Think about that the next time you stand, sit, or walk. Especially with anyone watching.
For a brilliant discussion of this, watch Amy Cuddy’s video on TED, below.

What do you know about privacy policies for your apps?
If you have a smart phone, pay attention. We've got some important information when it comes to your privacy.
A new study is out right now from the "Future of Privacy Forum." It shows app developers are now responding to increased pressure to put privacy policies on their apps. However, is it enough and do you even know where those policies are and if your apps have them?
If you have a smart phone, chances are you have downloaded an app. Maybe a friend told you about a great app you had to get.
Whether it's free or you pay for it, before you hit the download button, you better do some research first.
The app industry is booming. And you can find an app for just about everything. Before you download or install the app, check to see if there's a privacy policy.
Darien Hill is an Internet Consultant with YDG Mobile and said you need to be watchful of your information.
"It's important because as a consumer the data is your information," Hill said.
That means your personal information like your phone number, email and address book that some developers could access.
"Companies are taking that information for marketing purposes," Hill said.
Here's a catch you may not realize too. The industry is currently not regulated, which means many apps may not "clearly" have privacy policies. Instead, you may see something called a push notification asking if you'd like to be on their mailing list. By tapping yes, you are giving the company permission.
A company may ask for your email address or right under the app, there may be a description.
The bottom line do your research beforehand.
"Consumers need to be protected. Most companies are good companies but there are individuals out there that will use this software to steal your data," Hill said.
One more important thing Darien said is to watch out for a free app doesn't necessarily mean free" and can come with a price. Those free apps have ads and if you have children, be especially careful, as you may not know what the ads are that you could be exposing your children to.
Hill said he expects the app industry will be more tightly regulated soon and exact more specific guidelines could be put in place.

What do you know the cancer risk in your body?
My colleague Dr. Harvey Greenberg and I, and our advanced nurse practitioner Kayla Castaneda at the Texas Tech Division of Gynecologic Oncology clinic, decided to obtain additional training in genetic cancer risk assessment at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif.
This detailed cancer risk assessment measures a patient's risk for developing a hereditary cancer like breast, ovarian, uterine and colon cancers.
Genetic testing
Since our genetic cancer risk assessment clinic was launched, we have tested nearly 100 patients specifically for hereditary cancer risk. Many of our Hispanic patients have come up positive for some of these hereditary mutations. These mutations were thought to be specific to certain founder populations in Europe, like those of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.
We are continuing to enroll patients to be part of a collaborative study looking into these mutations in the Hispanic population. We test not only our own patients but also the patients of other community physicians and departments at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Many patients have also come to our clinic by word of mouth.
The test entails a blood draw

We provide all patients and their affected family members with follow-up care and counseling.
Recently, we tested a 40-year-old woman. Her mother has had breast and ovarian cancer and tested positive for a mutation of the BRCA gene, which is associated with hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome. The mother is undergoing treatment for recurrence of ovarian cancer.
The 40-year-old daughter is also BRCA positive, but she has not developed cancer. She is in an excellent position because she still has many options to prevent cancer through prophylactic surgery and other surveillance options. This is wonderful news and exactly why we do what we do.
A genetic cancer risk test costs $3,200 and is covered by most insurance plans or Medicaid. A patient assistance program is also available for those who meet financial criteria.
Free lecture
Along with our advanced nurse practitioner, I will be giving a free lecture and question-and-answer session on hereditary cancer at 5:30 p.m. July 30 at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, 200 N. Concepcion, Medical Education Building, Room 1140. Refreshments will be served and parking is free.
J. Salvador Saldivar, M.D., M.P.H., is an assistant professor in gynecology oncology in the department of OB/GYN, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso, who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. He has completed research and clinic training in gynecologic oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the University of British Columbia/British Columbia Cancer Center in Vancouver, Canada.

What Do You Know About Us?
What Do You Know About Us? David Hood (Head of Resource at Triple Seven) talks about the importance of researching the company before your interview…
Candidates need to realise that after taking time out of their busy schedule to meet with them, the least the interviewer can expect is for candidates to have an idea about the organisation they are interviewing with.
Sometimes passive candidates (i.e. those headhunted and not actively looking for a new role), neglect the preparation needed before an interview because they don’t ‘need’ a new job, only to get to the interview and realise it is a fantastic opportunity. Oh dear… Too late. And ill preparation will certainly not help your reputation in such a niche market.
At Triple Seven I like to ensure that candidates are fully prepared for this question. Making sure our candidates represent themselves (and us as an agency) in the best possible professional light is a key part of the Triple Seven culture. Not all agencies are the same so, before agreeing to work with any agency in regards to a particular vacancy, test their knowledge of the company and role by asking questions. If they can’t answer what you need, ask them to find out for you before allowing the agency to represent you. Their inside information on the role and company should make up 50% of your ammo in the interview. Have they met the client? What are the offices like?
From a personal perspective, candidates should make sure they check out the company’s website as well as checking out their products and downloading their offerings. With gaming operators, have a play on the games. With Technology platforms, who do they supply? Go and look at their client sites and have a play on there. In any instance, you can normally always play for free to get a feel.
Use LinkedIn to check out the background of the person interviewing you. Look at the people that work there. Make some notes on your thoughts. It is also good to have a look at their competitors; how do they compare? What are their strengths/weaknesses? How has this company managed to carve out a competitive edge?
Information about most organisations is generally freely available so you can check out a company’s size, year founded, geographic locations, recent financial successes, mergers/acquisitions.
Off the back of your research, you should form some interesting questions which you can present in the interview.
Any questions you don’t know the answer to, just ask your consultant!

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT IEC STANDARDS?
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was founded in 1906 and is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. They are World’s leading organization creating International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies, electrotechnology in short. Millions of devices depend on IEC standards to perform, fit and work safely together.
I spoke to IEC’s Head of Communications and IEC e-tech magazine Editor in Chief: Gabriela Ehrlich while she was visiting London couple of weeks ago. I was shocked to learn that there are standards for things I did not have idea about and how many of every day items rely on IEC standards, amazing!
The IEC promotes world trade and economic growth and encourages the development of products, systems and services that are safe, efficient and environmentally friendly. Their role is to help experts from countries all over the World to reach agreement and to prepare the rules, specifications and terminology that allow manufacturers to build devices that work together, safely and as expected. This way companies don’t have to test the same product for each country so if they spend less for testing, the product can be cheaper, more affordable and less waste is produced on the way…
IEC standards are named with letters and numbers such as IEC 60417 ( standard for graphical symbols for use on equipment). The IEC cooperates with other organizations like the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and many more. Standards developed together with ISO will be named for instance as ISO/IEC 26300 (Open Document format for office applications). In UK IEC standards are named with EN instead of IEC, so the mentioned above standard would be EN 60417.
You will be surprised how many home appliances, every day gadgets and big projects is dependent on standards. Little things like plugs or colour management on your computer uses IEC standards. There are standards normalizing how safe the oven glass should be so the child or older person would not burn their hand on the surface, they are standards for vacuum cleaners, phones, toys and everything around us, below couple of examples to show you how important standards are in our life:
